Diwali is one of the most important and famous festival of India. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over India. Every year, Diwali falls in the month of Kartik according to Hindu Calendar. This festival is also known as the festival of lights.
There are some ancient stories behind celebrating this festival. On this day, Lord Shriram along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman returned to his native place Ayodhya after 14 years exile.The citizens of Ayodhya welcomed them with lighting the lamps. That is why this festival is known as the festival of lights.
A few days before Diwali, people start preparing of Diwali. Everyone keeps their houses, shops and courtyard of the house clean and decorates the houses with attractive colors. On this occasion of Diwali, People buy new clothes, lamps, crackers and toys for themselves and for their childrens.
Diwali is mainly a 5 days festival.The first day of Diwali is known as Dhanteras.The second day of Diwali is celebrated as Narak Chaturdashi. Many years ago, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura on this day and won the victory of good over evil. On the third day, Diwali is celebrated with great fervor. Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera are worshiped on this day.The fourth day of Diwali is celebrated as Govardhan Puja.On this day, Lord Krishna raised the Govardhan mountain on his finger and saved the people from the heavy rains caused by the wrath of Lord Indra. The fifth day of Diwali is celebrated as Bhaiya Dooj. On this day, the brothers give some gifts to their sisters and the sisters also pray to God for the bright future of their brothers.
Diwali is a festival that creates a sense of unity in the minds of the people. Hence, Diwali is known as the favorite festival of all.
